The ember octopus (Thermoctopus fabricator) is a semi-sapient cephalopod native to the hydrothermal vents of Nereid. It is known for casting simple metal tools in the heat of the vents.
Description
The ember octopus closely resembles the octopuses of Earth. Its red-brown skin can flash orange and gold to signal to others.
Behaviour
Adults melt tin and lead in vent water hotter than 350 °C, and pour it into hollows in the rock to make blades and hooks. Mothers teach the skill to their young.
